Elijah and Elisha: A Double Portion of Thy Spirit
Immediately prior to the time Elijah was caught up to heaven in the whirlwind, his younger understudy Elisha requested a double portion of Elijah’s spirit (2Kings 2:9). When Elisha asked to receive a “double portion” of Elijah’s spirit, he was not seeking a ministry twice as great as his master’s. Elijah, being under the inspiration of God, left the gift Elisha requested in God’s hands. Then he replied and said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.” (2Kings 2:10) Elisha sees Elijah being taken up by the chariots of God at the Jordan River and God fulfills the request – Elijah received the “double portion,” the power and authority of his master. It is ironic that Elijah performs 14 works of God while Elisha is given 28!! Elisha went on to accomplish greater works of God than his master Elijah by performing exactly double the miracles his master performed in the name of God.

Elijah’s 14 Miracles:

1. Causing the rain the cease for 3 1/2 years– 1Kings 17:1

3. Miracle of the barrel of meal and cruse of oil – 1Kings 17:14

4. Resurrection of the widow’s son – 1Kings 17:22

7. Prophecy that Ahab’s sons would all be destroyed – 1Kings 21:22

8. Prophecy that Jezebel would be eaten by dogs – 1Kings 21:23

9. Prophecy that Ahaziah would die of his illness – 2Kings 1:4

10. Calling fire from heaven upon the first 50 soldiers – 2Kings 1:10
