Titles of the Holy Spirit
Do not cast me from your presence or take your HOLY SPIRIT from me (Psa. 51:11). And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised HOLY SPIRIT, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God`s possession – to the praise of his glory (Eph. 1:13-14).
And do not grieve the HOLY SPIRIT of God with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption (Eph. 4:30).
Counselor
And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another COUNSELOR to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth (John 14:16).
Power of the Most High
The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the POWER OF THE MOST HIGH will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God’ (Luke 1:35).
Spirit of Adoption
You did not receive a spirit of slavery leading you back into fear, but a SPIRIT OF ADOPTION through which we cry out, “Abba!” (that is, “Father!”) (Rom. 8:15).
Spirit of Christ
Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the SPIRIT OF CHRIST in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow (1Pet. 1:10-11).
Spirit of Counsel
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the SPIRIT OF COUNSEL and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord (Isa. 11:2).
Spirit of the Father
But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the SPIRIT OF YOUR FATHER speaking through you (Mat. 10:19-20). Mat. 10:20 describes Him as “The Spirit of your Father.” The Lord Jesus Christ points to the Personality of the Holy Spirit when He responded to Peter’s confession of faith by saying, “it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.” Though He speaks through people it is still evident that He speaks as a Person.
Spirit of Fire
Our God is a CONSUMING FIRE (Heb. 12:29). He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with FIRE (Luke 3:16).
Spirit of Glory
If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the SPIRIT OF GLORY and of God rests on you (1Pet. 4:14).
Spirit of God
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the SPIRIT OF GOD was hovering over the waters (Gen. 1:2). In 1 Cor. 3:16 He is called ‘The Spirit of God’ … “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” This is the equivalent of “The Spirit of the Lord GOD” (Isa. 61:1), “The Spirit of the living God” (2Cor. 3:3), and “The Spirit of God” (Gen. 1:2). These verses reveal the Holy Spirit’s relationship to the Godhead. He is the Spirit of Jehovah.
Spirit of Grace and Supplication
And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a SPIRIT OF GRACE AND SUPPLICATION (Zech. 12:10). This name is found in Zech. 12:10 … “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications.” We are connecting this term with the Holy Spirit since Heb. 10:29 calls Him “The Spirit of Grace.” The Holy Spirit is responsible, along with the church, for calling mankind to Christ … “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Rev. 22:17). He brings God’s mercy, and directs and draws the sinner to Christ, because He is the Spirit of Grace.
Spirit of Holiness
… regarding His son, who as to His human nature was a descendant of David,…and who through the SPIRIT OF HOLINESS was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom. 1:3-4).
“And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead” (Rom. 1:4). The very fact that He is the Holy Spirit proves that He is the Spirit of Holiness. Without holiness the believer automatically hinders the work of the Holy Spirit in his life. Such holiness is gained as we draw nearer to God and are transformed by His Spirit. The Holy Spirit’s work involves sanctification. The Spirit of Holiness is working to bring “the beauty of holiness” into our lives (Psa. 29:2).
Spirit of Judgment
The Lord will wash away the filth of the women of Zion; he will cleanse the bloodstains from Jerusalem by a SPIRIT OF JUDGEMENT and a Spirit of Fire (Isa. 4:4).The Holy Spirit, as God, is intimately involved in justice, law, and order. An aspect of His ministry concerns purity and sanctification. This is why the terms “The Spirit of Judgment” and “The Spirit of Burning” (Isa. 4:4; 28:5-6) is used in Scripture. The Lord Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit’s ministry in a similar way … “And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged” (John 16:8-11). This once again reveals the inter-relationship of the Trinity, for John the Baptist said that Jesus Christ would “Baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire” (Mat. 3:11).
Spirit of Knowledge
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him – the spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the SPIRIT OF KNOWLEDGE and of the fear of the Lord (Isa. 11:2).
Spirit of Life
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the SPIRIT OF LIFE set me free from the law of sin and death (Rom. 8:1-2). In Rom. 8:2 it is written, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” The Spirit of Life is just as available today as He was in the first century church. Our relationship with God should not be boring, lifeless and regimented. The Holy Spirit brings life-giving dynamic power into the life of the believer. His presence should be part of every area of our lives because He is the Spirit of Life.
Spirit of Counsel and Power
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him- the spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the SPIRIT OF COUNSEL AND OF POWER, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord (Isa. 11:2). You will receive POWER when the Holy Spirit comes upon you (Acts 1:8).
Spirit of Prophecy
At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the SPIRIT OF PROPHECY ” (Rev. 19:10).
Spirit of Sonship
For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the SPIRIT OF SONSHIP. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father” (Rom. 8:15).
Spirit of the Fear of the Lord
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the spirit of counsel and of power, the SPIRIT OF KNOWLEDGE AND OF THE FEAR OF THE LORD (Isa. 11:2).
Spirit of the Son
Because you are sons, God sent the SPIRIT OF HIS SON into our hearts, the spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father” (Gal. 4:6).
Spirit of the Sovereign Lord
The SPIRIT OF THE SOVEREIGN LORD is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release for the prisoners (Isa. 61:1).
Spirit of Truth
But when he, the SPIRIT OF TRUTH, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; He will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come (John 16:13).He is called the Spirit of Truth because it is impossible for Him to lie or be in error. His ministry has its foundation squarely on the truth of God’s Word, since He is it Author … “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2Tim. 3:16). He will not lead or direct contrary to what the Scriptures teach and say. This is why the Bible is known as quot; The sword of the Spirit” (Eph. 6:17). Only those who are led by the Holy Spirit have the truth … “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you” … “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of” … “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come” (John 14:16-17; 15:26; 16:13). We must have the Holy Spirit operating in our lives otherwise we do not belong to God or we will fall into error … “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his” … “Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error” (Rom. 8:9; 1John 4:6).
Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him – the SPIRIT OF WISDOM AND OF UNDERSTANDING , the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord (Isa. 11:2).
Willing Spirit
Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me, restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a WILLING SPIRIT to sustain me (Psa. 51:12).
The Spirit of Promise
On the Day of Pentecost the followers of Christ were gathered together to wait for the fulfillment of Christ’s promise, THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (Acts. 2:1-4; 2:33), as was prophesied in Joel 2:28.The Scriptures tell us that all flesh (mankind) could receive of this promise. Paul makes it clear that true believers have the Spirit of Promise … “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise” (Eph. 1:13).
The Comforter
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another COMFORTER, that he may abide with you forever (John 14:16). This is probably the most well known and used names of the Holy Spirit. Here in John 14:16, we find the precious promise of Jesus Christ to His disciples. The Greek word for Comforter is ‘Parakletos.’ ‘Para’ means ‘alongside’ and ‘kaletos’ means ‘to call.’ Therefore, the Holy Spirit was to be sent by Jesus to be with His followers. The word was also used in a legal sense also. A paraclete was someone who was the defence council or advocate at a trial. We know that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us … “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Rom. 8:26).
The Holy Spirit, as the Comforter, is with us to instruct, guide, and assist throughout our lives. He will teach us what the Scriptures say and teach … “These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly of the Father” (John 16:25). The Holy Spirit will only ever reveal and glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He only works through those who magnify and obey the Lord. He encourages, comforts, empowers, and helps us to live for Christ.
